Meeting of October 13, 2011
Glynis McKenzie chaired the meeting in the absence of Chair Howe and Vice Chair Schroeter.
Glynis McKenzie called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
I. ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Karen Howe; Glynis McKenzie; Judy Okeson;

ABSENT: Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien; (excused);Florence Schroeter (excused); Sue Tukey.
II. MINUTES

To approve the minutes of September 8, 2011.
Two Corrections:
Judy Okeson recommended having a Purchase Award Exhibit during the year.
The Paul Bisaccia program is entitled “Classic Christmas Jazz Christmas”.
Approved with corrections.
III. CHAIR’S REPORT
Glynis McKenzie reported on behalf of Chair Howe:
Chair Howe heard from Hilde Mayranen O’Brien and Hilde will be taking a leave of absence from the Fine Arts Commission until further notice.
Chair Howe also received a letter from Roberta Sweeney resigning from the Commission.
IV. CORRESPONDENCE
- Terrye Blackstone received a Wadsworth Calendar and from 10/21 – 2/19/12 Patti Smith is featured.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Photography
John Ryan stated he is having difficulty finding photographers to exhibit because of the cost involved. He is asking for recommendations. Dan Russell recommended have a town-wide “Give Us Your Best Shot” exhibit. John will investigate the possibility.
Art
Terrye Blackstone reported that Will Dougal, a caricaturist, will do a program on Sunday, October 16. Publicity was in the Gazette. The cost is $250.00.
Terrye further reported she is scheduling Luciana Heineman to do a program in November. Her cost will be $200.
Terrye has spoke with Emil Kopcha, principal at Sunset Ridge Fine Arts and World Language Academy, to have a Master Class for the art classes. The artist will be Marilyn Thrall. This program will take place in November or December. A maximum of $700 will be charged if supplies are to be purchased by the artist.
Children’s Programs
Regina Barall reported the dance/movement program is being held at Willowbrook. It began in September and will run through June 2012. The cost is $1000. Regina stated that Chair Howe had given her approval to have this program for the set amount. Discussion was held and it was decided that all monies being spent must be brought to the entire Commission for approval.

To approve the $1000 to Circle of Life for the Willowbrook Dance/Movement program.
Approved.
Glynis McKenzie reported that she spoke with Bea Piersa. Two children’s programs are being planned for school vacation in December (storyteller) and February (drummer). Total cost for both programs will be $725.00.

Regina Barall reported she will be doing a Ms. Manner’s Program in the children’s room at Raymond Library and the cost is $300.

Music
Glynis McKenzie reminded Commissioners of the two programs in December. Paul Bisaccia and the CitySingers.
EHSYF
Glynis McKenzie reported that there will be a fundraiser for EHSYF at the EHCCC on November 10 at 7:00 p.m. (note: same evening as Commission meeting) Cost is $7.00 with $2.00 going to a charity. The fundraiser is a musical production “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” and will also be performed on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. Glynis encouraged members to attend.
EHSYF will also be doing community service within local nursing homes. And they will be performing at Holiday Fest.
Dance
Regina Barall reported she is considering moving her spring program from April 2012 to May 2012.
The Gatsby Gala was successful.
Drama/Lecture/Poetry
Prescille Yamamoto will investigate the following programs:
- “Tea with Eleanor Roosevelt”
- Magic Lantern Show
She will report back next month with dates and costs.
Film Series
Glynis McKenzie reported that John Ryan will be doing the equipment. He is still trying to contact Roger Moss to get training.
Mini-Grant – East Hartford Public Schools
Betty Russell reported she spoke with Laura White. Laura White is requesting to come to a meeting to discuss the use of technology in the Fine Arts program. Betty will contact her to have her attend the November meeting.
Betty further reported the application deadline is October 24, 2011. Regina Barall and Judith Okeson will work with Betty for approval recommendations.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Town of East Hartford Pamphlet
Terrye Blackstone will speak with Marilyn Pet.
Regina Barall stated that ChildPlan did a pamphlet and will get it to the clerk for distribution with the minutes.
Distribution of sub-committee monies
Discussion was held, monies were distributed, PrescilleYamamoto will have a new spreadsheet for the November meeting.
VII. NEW BUSINESS
- Nominating Committee
Prescille Yamamoto and Maureen Rogers agreed to be on the Nominating Committee. The Slate of Officers will be presented at the November meeting.

IX. MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Regina Barall reported that St. Joseph’s is hosting a film festival the entire month.
Glynis McKenzie reported that MCC also sponsors a film festival.
Betty Russell recommended that the Commission sponsor a “Teacher Art Exhibit” at the Brewer House in the spring.
Terrye Blackstone received information from Ray Johnson on former town resident Bill Nabel.
